Advicenators discussion: Vegetarianism

ductape_n_roses wrote Tuesday August 7 2007, 1:33 pm:
So, I've been a vegetarian for a while now and I absolutely love it. I don't feel guilty about a cow being murdered when I'm hungry and I feel really freakishly healthy =D There's been talk going on about vegetarianism and rejection by groups of people. Unjustly, people tie vegetarianism as "just another reason to be anorexic" and then they tie in veg/vegans to being those crazies that are part of demos and protests. Well, corrections: animal rights supporters and activists are crazies, thank you very much. But really, vegetarianism/veganism is a healthy lifestyle to follow. Even he says so: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) Me, I'm a vegetarian for animal rights reasons only.

Types of vegetarians:
Lacto-Ovo vegetarians- do NOT eat meat, poultry, or fish. They DO eat dairy, egg, and honey

Lacto vegetarians- do NOT eat meat, poultry, fish, or eggs. They DO eat dairy and honey.

Ovo vegetarians- do NOT eat meat, poultry, fish, or dairy. They DO eat eggs and honey.

Pescetarians- do NOT eat meat or poultry. They DO eat fish and other seafoods.

Pollotarian- do NOT eat meat of fish/seafood. They DO eat poultry.

Vegans- do NOT eat anything derived from an animal.

Now that's over with...if you're a veg/vegan for animal rights reason, you most likely won't wear anything derived from an anima [fur, wool, leather, etc] and would use products NOT tested on animals [shampoos, cosmetics, etc]

Food. What are you suppose to eat? Well, first of all, let's talk about what you will probably deprive yourself of unintentionally:

Vitamin B12: dairy products, eggs, and vitamin-fortified products, such as cereals, breads, and soy and rice drinks

Vitamin D: dairy products, calcium-fortified orange juice, and vitamin-fortified products

Calcium: dairy products, dark green leafy vegetables, broccoli, chickpeas, and calcium-fortified products, including orange juice, soy and rice drinks, and cereals

Protein: dairy products, eggs, tofu, dried beans, and nuts

Iron: eggs, dried beans, dried fruits, whole grains, leafy green vegetables, and iron-fortified cereals and bread

Zinc: wheat germ, nuts, fortified cereal, and legumes

Be sure to get enough amounts of those everyday!

When you make a transition from being a omnivore [aka meat eater], I suggest you first start out by being a polloterian. Then completely be a lacto-ovo vegetarian afterwards. Anyways, when you make the transition, you're going to feel hungry and empty a lot of the times because you're no longer eating meat. Becareful, though! When you get hungry, you might just reach for that cookie on the table or that piece of pie sitting on the counter. Don't! Empty calories won't fill you up and you'll end up eating more calories than you need, without getting the satisfaction of feeling full. Instead, grab healthy foods like veggies, fruits, nuts, etc.

*Items listed may contain trace amounts of animal-derived ingredients. While sticking to 100% veganism is great, boycotting products that are 99.9 percent vegan sends manufacturers the message that there is no market for that particular food, which ends up hurting more animals.

Hmmm, I hope that you didn't forget about your veggies, fruits, and soy milk =) That list sshould give you a good idea to create a shopping list. Alas! Vegetarians/vegs don't eat only veggies!

Not quite sure if these are included up there:
Morning Star brand fooods
Boca brand foods
Spinach Nuggest
Mozzarella and Tomato Raviolies
Smucker's PB&J
Valley Farm Organic Yogurt [Check the ingredients to be sure]
Top Ramen Oriental Flavor
Top Ramen Vegetable Cup Noodle
Twizzlers
Lentils!

Things you wouldn't suspect...
Gelatin [Poptarts frosting, some marshmellows, some yogurt, jell-o, jelly products, gummies, some cream cheeses, etc]

Make sure to eat healthily! Don't grab for junk foods when you're hungry. I can tell you from experience that it's a stupid thing to do and an easy way to put on weight.

***For a shorter list of foods, go to my other topic "Fats, Carbs, Proteins, wtf???" If you scroll down, there should be a list of "good, healthy foods." Obviously, you're not going to go out and buy chicken just because it's on the list. That list is for people who are not veg/vegans. So, obviously pick out veg/vegan friendly foods from there =)

Haha. I just gave you guys a long list of food to prove that veg/vegans

Do not starve
Are not anorexic
Do eat something more than veggies and fruits
And eat 75% of the food non veg/vegans eat!

--I probably forgot to add lots of thinks and there ar probably some errors and typos and misleading information up there. Instead of yelling at me and bitching to me about it, how about you tell me nicely ??? Haha. Merci beaucoup
