Advicenators discussion: MSU vs UM

Just starting the thread :)

So why one over the other?

Like I said, I got accepted into both, so that wasn't a problem.

I visited MSU late November 2009 for an Honors College informational thing. I really started liking what I was hearing. I found out about a scholarship test in February, research opportunities, how much AP credit I could potentially get, and a lot of other things. I found out the benefits of MSU's Honors program, and they rock. I don't have to complete some of the university requirements that everyone else does. I get replacements, which is basically anything I opt for. Which is nice. Also, the Honors College pays me $1,000 a semester for being in it.

Because of my ACT score, I'm guaranteed a research job when I start school. I'm getting paid around $1,380 a semester for it, depending on how many hours I work. This job really sets me up for future years and for future research, because if I get to know my prof for it, he/she might ask me to come back and will still continue paying me. So that's pretty awesome.

As far as UM goes, I don't think they have anything like that. I know they have undergraduate research, but nothing like the caliber of MSU's. I know for theirs, I would have had to apply for a job, and since ALL undergraduate students (Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen) are applying, the chances I'd get one were slim at best.

It was the same with UM's Honors Program. I had to apply. With MSU, I was automatically accepted when I applied to the school. And not everyone gets into their Honors program that's qualified, unlike at MSU. They only have a certain number of spots, and I guess only 11% of the class gets in. Which is kind of terrible. I like how MSU does it, because if you've already met the requirements, you should be able to be in. I hate that UM makes you go through another, unnecessary application process. It just didn't make sense to me. It kind of added to the whole "we're VERY selective" thing they had going on, and how annoying it was that when I got my acceptance letter to UM, it was all snooty.

MSU was FAR from snooty. I felt SO welcome when I visited in November. I felt really welcome when I went for the scholarship test in February. I felt really welcome at orientation and every time I'm up in East Lansing, I feel WANTED. I feel like everyone is really nice and actually wants me there. MSU sent me so many emails and letters with a ton of information. I felt like they did a really good job of recruiting, and all the information they sent was so important and eye-opening to transitioning to college. I felt like UM never emailed me or sent me mail, except my acceptance letter. I felt like they didn't really want me there. I felt like they just cared about acting like I owed THEM for getting into their school. I was really turned off by that.

UM gave a significantly less amount of AP credit than did MSU. That wasn't the deciding factor, but it was just something else that really helped. I had a potential to get 26 credits with my AP tests. I only got 22, but regardless, I would have only gotten like 14 at UM. I'm already almost a sophomore going into MSU. Not that it really matters.

I've never heard of anything like an Honor's College before. That's pretty neat :) LOL

What exactly is it you will be researching? What are you majoring in?
Cux wrote Wednesday August 4 2010, 8:35 pm:
I don't know my research assignment yet!

I'm Pre-Med. But when I have to declare a "real" major, I'll do Biochemistry or something.
