What to do with overprotective parents?

Question Posted Thursday October 25 2018, 3:59 pm

My parents are controlling everything in my life and I’m getting sick of it. I’m going to be 20 in two months and I haven’t really experienced anything in my life yet because my parents rarely let me go out. None of my friends really invite me out anymore cause they know my parents won’t let me go. It’s not really my dad it’s mostly my mom who acts so protective. My dad would say “you’re an adult do whatever you want” but when the clock strikes 10pm he wants me home as soon as possible, so I can’t even go clubbing with my friends (the legal age to drink is 19 here). Today was the last straw when I told my mom I was thinking of going on this school trip where I’ll be gone for a month to a city that’s 5 hours away. My dad wants me to go so I can explore but my mom said “I don’t know if you’re gonna go cause it’s 5 hours away and I can’t come see you” so???. Before you ask yes I still live at home, my mom didn’t allow me to live on school residence because it was “too expensive” but two years later (this year) my younger sister is living on residence currently doing everything my parents would never let her do if she stayed at home. For example she went to a concert (my mom doesn’t know about this but my mom said if we ever went to a concert she has to be there), my sister already spent the night with some guy (in general we were never allowed to sleep over at someone’s house let alone a guy). She’s already been to a few parties. I know it’s not good to compare myself to others but she’s my younger sister and it’s embarrassing that she gets to do all these things and I’m basically being sheltered please help

I know exactly what you mean, my parents are the same way. The best thing to do is to express to your parents that you’re an adult and can make your own decisions. Next time you want to go somewhere or do something present it to your parents as a statement and not a question. For example when you want to go out with friends just say “i’m going out, be back soon”. Of course I understand that your parents care about you and they want to make sure that you’re safe but it has clearly gone too far if its interfering with your social life. If the method I mentioned previously doesn’t quite work just talk it out with your parents. Explain why you’re upset with them and use examples of how their hovering is affecting your social life negatively. It also wouldn’t hurt to use your sister as an example. I mean you said that your YOUNGER sister is doing things that you aren’t allowed to do, and thats not really fair that they’re putting you on a different standerd. I hope this works out for you and your parents give you a little more breathing room. Best of luck.
