I'm in a college financial dillema, what should I do?
Question Posted Tuesday May 31 2016, 12:45 pm
I'm 22 and a sophomore in college. I know that sounds odd, but when I graduated high school I went straight into the workforce because I didn't have the money to go into college and my parents weren't financially stable enough to help.
When I very first started taking college classes I lived with my mom who worked FT, I worked PT, and took night classes so the bills were paid and everything worked out.
Then stupid me, I decided I wanted to go for a Bachelors instead of an AA to further my career and the only way to do that was to move out of my town into a bigger one. I was making really good grades and was accepted for a scholarship that totally covered my dorming at a school a few hours away and decided to make the move. Of course by doing this it meant I also became a full-time student, which at the time sounded like a good idea because I'd get done with my degree faster.
Now I've been here 6 months and things just aren't working out like I foresaw. For a couple months I didn't work because I had savings to pay my bills (car payment, insurance, groceries, ect) and I wanted to get into the groove of taking real classes at a real university. Then it took me two months to actually find a PT job that would work with my full time class schedule. when I finally got a job that could do this they wound up scamming me and after working there a month and a half they never paid me and then the company closed down with nobody to contact about it. Luckily, I was able to get a job pretty fast with my school and I thought that sounded perfect because it's not like the school I'm attending would scam me right? Now I've been working there for a month and they haven't paid me and said that I won't get a paycheck for another two weeks. This was financially devastating to me because I've now gone without a paycheck for a long time and gone through all but $100 of my savings as I've still had to pay my bills.
Since I've moved I haven't been able to afford to buy any new clothes and I really need to because I only have about a week and a half's worth of outfits, one pair of casual shoes, one pair of formal, and the rest are winter shoes which I can't wear during the summer. I've only been able to buy cheap groceries that aren't nutritious which is taking a huge toll on my health and how I feel, I haven't been able to afford to buy more vitamins and I'm running really low on groceries again with an insurance payment looming in a week that will put me in the negative (I'm hoping I can somehow delay it until I get paid).
I also don't like living on campus with strangers and I'm already sick of dealing with sharing a place with somebody I don't know who doesn't even try to be friendly.
I'm just really done feeling like this and I don't think it's worth it for a Bachelors which may or may not land me a job.
I want to work full time again so that I can actually afford to live decently and take classes PT. Of course the issue with this is that I can't live on campus if I'm only taking PT classes, which of course I'm also fine with, but I don't know where to even start with getting a place off campus until I've saved up money which I can't do with this job. I also feel like I would still need a roommate to share a place with and I don't know where to get one of those either because nobody here seems to actually be working so they can't pay bills (their parents are supporting them mostly).
I really need help here, I feel like I'm drowning and I need to get out of this mess!
I know people say lots of kids work FT and go to school FT, but it's not the issue of being able to handle both, it's that I don't know any employers here who are willing to work around a full class schedule and still give you full time hours. It's just not possible so I will need to only be taking classes PT and hence, will have to get a place off campus.
PS. There is no way I'm moving back home so that's not a possibility.
