I just got accepted into a University in another city, how to prepare?

Question Posted Wednesday September 30 2015, 9:16 pm

First of all, I'm a transfer student so I have a little bit of college experience (around 9 months) but I currently attend a small private school. My issue with my current school is that I don't feel like I'm getting much out of it and it didn't feel like a real "college" experience. I always had the highest grades and was surrounded by a bunch of middle aged or older adults who just weren't interested in even trying to become friends or do well in their classes. It's also in a small town that I didn't want to be stuck in for a while (especially since I live with my mom).

Anyways, I applied to a Uni in one of my favorite cities and today I got my acceptance letter! I'm 21 (though I could pass for 15-18 easily) is that going to hinder me from being able to join sororities and fit in with the social scene?

I really want to make lots of friends (though I know not to let it interfere with my education) so I plan on dorming and I also really want to get into a REAL sorority. How do you go about joining these? Do you apply before the term starts or what?

How else can I prepare for my new college life that will be starting in late January? I should be there a while as I plan on getting my Masters.

First off, congratulations on your acceptance! But let's get right down to your questions... As far as looks go, that should not affect you being able to join a sorority (because obviously if you were 15, you wouldn't even be in college, right?) so put that out of your mind completely, it's not something you should even worry about. Living in a dorm is going to automatically help you to meet tons of new people and make plenty of new friends. As for joining sororities, I can't tell you exactly how that will work at your campus because every college/sorority group has their own way of doing things, but I suggest checking into if your college offers tours/preview days where you can ask those sort of questions to administration and students before you actually get there. Most sororities will require some sort of recruitment process, etc. So just find out what you'll have to do to be accepted into the specific sororities on your campus... And as far as preparing, don't wait until the last minute, start ASAP!! There are many articles/packing lists for college that you can find online that will help you remember to take things with you to college/your dorm that you might not even consider or forget. (Dozens of trips between your dorm and mom's house aren't fun, especially if they're in two different cities). Also, try to learn as much about campus before you get there (another reason those orientation/tour days are so helpful), try looking up the Universities website and just try to stay informed with what activities and such you can expect when you finally get on campus. Hope this helped and best of luck to you at college!
