While I am not a doctor, having suffered from similar pain myself I can say that if the nerve or disc is sitting on a nerve it can cause pain and or numbness in your leg. Now that is how my pain affects me. What is causing your pain can and may very well be something different and you really need to get a second opinion.

You don't say how long this has been going on. IF it is fairly recent, the fact that you can touch a point on your spine and make it hurt worse bothers me. For as I said if you were to call for EMT"S or Paramedics to come to you because of the pain they would have to follow the protocols I wrote about for stabilization during transport.

If this is a relatively recent event going to a hospital emergency room to be seen is not out of the question and may be the proper thing to do.

As to why the pain is more bothersome at night then during the day. The only reason I know of is we are less active and not having something else to concentrate on allows the pain to come though. Yes my pain has woken me up at night and I have been stiff to the point I have to get out of bed and walk around to loosen up and relieve the pain.

One other thing; Pain is a relative thing. Meaning what is painful for you may not be painful to me. We use a scale of 1 to 10 to rate pain. A score of 1 is almost no pain and a score of 10 is the worst pain you have ever felt.

If your pain score is upwards in the 8 or 9 area I would suggest you consider either going to the ER yourself or calling 911. When my pain scores get that high I have narcotic pain pills to take as breakthrough medications. IF they don't work and I hit 10 my wife is calling 911 for I need IV medication to kill the pain then it is off to my pain doctor for the procedures he does.

What is causing my pain is not correctable by surgery so I am seen at a major hospital Pain Management center. At the moment I am scheduled for oblations surgery. This is where they go in and burn the nerve endings so they cannot transmit the pain. The pain does not go away just the nerves can't transmit the pain to my brain so I don’t really feel it. This will be my third time in 10 years for this.

It sounds worse than it is. It is done with needles in my back and I'm asleep for most of it. They have to wake me up before they do the actual burning to make sure they have the right nerves then its 5 minutes and I'm in the recovery room.

I've told you this so that you know surgery is not always the only option. There are some good pain management centers out there that might be able to relieve the pain without surgery. But first you have to find out what you’re dealing with and if surgery is the only option. Here again if surgery is recommended you have the right to a second opinion which the insurance company will pay for.
