If you are having it professionally done, they normally have a book full of colors and they will probably suggest something that is close to your hair color but you'll be able to tell the difference.

My hair is very dark brown, almost black. When I got my hair highlighted, I think I had chestnut colored highlights. They do fade though, if you don't keep up with them it almost looked blond. Anyways, after that I got this really dark red color that I absolutely loved.

Just try getting a color that isn't too far off from your color to start off with. Then later start changing it up. You don't want to do anything too drastic, if you do it calm this time, your mom will let you do it again.
So I'd stick with browns first.

I would suggest start with shades that are close to black such as dark browns. There are actually lots of shades in that range, believe it or not. If you are going to get it done professionally, I would ask them. They have the best knowledge.
