Razor burn on pubic area

Question Posted Thursday July 26 2012, 12:47 pm

I currently have irritated skin around my genitals that seems to have been caused by shaving. I have razor burn, some dry flaky skin, and even a cut going upwards from my outer labia. I will be seeing my gynecologist next week, and I plan to bring up the issue then. For the time being, what can I do for relief or to clear up the area? I obviously haven't shaved for a few days now (close to a week I think), but I'm worried the area might be infected, causing more difficulties to healing. What can I do?

There also appears to be a whitehead in the area..

You can use an organic, unperfumed, and non-alcohol based moisturizer to help with the dry skin. When shaving next time, here are some tips:

1. Make sure the area is wet. Shave after a shower or bath, as the hair is softened with the hot water, making it easier to shave.
2. Use a new razor: if the blades are blunt, it will catch the skin and the results will be very painful.
3. Soak the blades in hot water too, so that they are easier to glide.
4. Don't push the razor down: just let it glide naturally. If you need to push it, then the razor is blunt and you need to replace it.
5. Use plenty of shaving cream/foam/oil. I find shaving oil to be great, because it moisturizes the skin too. You can also see where you are shaving and so it minimizes accidents.
6. Shave with hair growth, not against it. So shave in the direction the hair is growing in. Shaving against the hair growth can be painful and can cause ingrown hairs
7. Moisturize after shaving.

Try waxing as an alternative!

Hope I helped
