(rubber bands, spacers, and even head gear, and pulled teeth as well) one of the ways (which the person below me did not mention) was swishing salt water around in your mouth. (warm salt water) and yes, I know everyone says that, but the reason why your mouth will hurt is because your gums will be sore (often times) and this will help. and like the other person said, pain pills, excedrin, I wouldn't recommend because I'm pretty sure they have caffeine in them. personally I would take advil, because.. I'm big on advil, it is what helped me. Also if it becomes too sore at any point or it's difficult to eat and you feel like something is rubbing your gum or anything check with the orthodontist.
This happened to me when I first got them on and they had to re-adjust it because the band wasn't right or something and I couldn't eat and it was just horrid pain. So if it's too much tell the orthodontist I'm not sure if they can maybe tighten the braces less but I would imagine they could do that (it would just mean you'd have them for longer)
good luck! it's usually not tooo bad.
just take one advil every 4-5 hours. (try taking one, see if it works, if it doesn't take 2) I used to take 4 at a time, then I realized that just taking one worked just fine.
Another thing, I've never tried is orajel or whatever it's called, it is for short term I think and it temporarily numbs your gums which can provide relief from pain as well. (Also you can get canker medicine which may come in handy, seeing as how if you have braces at first the braces may rub on the cheek and cause sores, which can be quite painful. <-- salt water works well here too)

For example, if it's an achy pain, try hot tea. If your braces happened to make a sore on the inside of your cheek, try the ice cream. Best of luck, hope the pain goes away!
