I'm thinking about joining soon.
I have a few questions..
1)Which branch should I join?
2)What are the benefits of each?
3)Navy vs the others?
4)School and military at same time?
5)I want to major in film writing, do you think military would conflict in that goal?
6)About how long does it take to process into the military?
Thanks for help
1) Go into the Branch that gives you the best option as far as a job goes. film writing? sounds like you'll want to check out the media branches of all four of the major services (American Forces Network has personnel from every one of them) But I will warn you, the Army and Marines pride themselves upon living in absolute crapholes, so I advise Navy or Air Force if you like comfort.
2) The Benefits are usually Bragging rights (of which you will have none as a Rear Echelon newscaster at AFN), The Post 9/11 GI Bill(AWESOME!!), job experience, development as a leader, Life Skills(discipline), and serving your country.
3) whenever I see Navy, I am reminded of pride parades. they have a million damn uniforms, a million damn pointless customs, and can't seem to pull their heads out of their asses. Go Air Force if you have the choice, its like a civilian job, but with guns and a "Rank Structure". plus you won't get stuck out on a ship for six months at a time with a bunch of smelly sweaty dudes. its bad enough being around a bunch of sweaty smelly people on land.
4) yes. totally possible, especially in a chillax job like at AFN. you can go active duty and take college courses on base, at sea, deployed... all for FREE. people with jobs that involve doing actual military things like killing folks usually don't have the time, but all of those people sitting back in the rear apparently have all the time in the world to do so.
5) The Military can facilitate a major in film writing by giving you on-the-job experience as long as you choose that as your job in the military.
6) when I enlisted in 2004, the process was pretty simple, only took about a week to get the paperwork approved, then I spent a day at MEPS getting checked out by doctors. wait a few weeks, then ship off to Basic training.
Whatever you choose, have fun, stay safe, and remain proactive in pursuit of your degree. I wish I had free time to work on mine when I was in, but I spent my time jumping out of planes and getting on the cover of "Soldier of Fortune". My time in The Army made me the man I am today, and I am thankful for that. Hope you have a good experience as well.

Nicholas answered Wednesday April 18 2012, 3:59 am: I'll make it as short as I can.
I work with all the branches even the coast guard
and from my experiences (about a year and 5 months )
I believe your best choice would be the Air Force
there main focus is education then work
they provide much better living quality and
A personal supervisor to sort your needs
Their bases are clean, safe and the personnel are very helpful from what I encountered so far.
2. the benefits are all rather the same I won't get into detail
3. The navy you will get to travel more, if you like ships it's also a good choice, however if you dislike being gone from months at a time out in the ocean with a bunch of other seaman reconsider - Now I am not saying the navy are only on ships.. it all depends what job you have
personal choice and The Navy is my second choice
4. all branches push for schooling, some more than others, I believe the Air Force and Army are on top of these, but I may be wrong. It comes down to self motivation -you'll get yearly income for schooling the AF calls it tuition assistance
pays for just about everything.. however with budget cuts and a horrible debt were likely to get this cut in half. theres also lot of detail that comes into this look it up
5. No as long as it doesn't interfere too much with work and trust me, you'll have plenty of time for schooling in the AF.
6. The Air Force took me nearly a year before I even got to go to boot camp
9 week total boot camp (many don't count the zero week)
and for me, a 6 month tech school period
Not everyone feels this way, but the air force is best described as my family, they take good care of me and I trust they will in the future.
However, I have to say for the record that I am likely bias due to the fact I am in the Air Force
so it all comes down to choice
if you like getting mud on your face, dirt in your eyes and sweating a pool then I don't suggest AF or Navy (unless Special Ops)
Go for Army or Marines
though don't come complaining to be when you got a twin size bed and I got a queen, or when your room is a closet size and mine a mansion
or your 6 mile rucksack march and our beach day :) [ Nicholas's advice column | Ask Nicholas A Question ]
Horselover21 answered Monday April 16 2012, 10:28 pm: Wow, you sound so much like my brother! My brother just joined the Army and is leaving for boot camp soon.
SO the first question, it all depends on what you can handle and where youwant to save people. You know in water, land, air. The Marines is very harsh and has lots of discipline so if that's what you want you can go there. But Air Force is usually called Chiar Force because of it's ease but not all of it is easy. I like Army most because it's not too hard or too easy and the uniforms are nice.
Benefits of each: Well you learn lots of disipline with each but more with Marines. Air Force is you get to fly usually and see the world from a different point of view as your job. Coast Guard is you get to stay on the sea and see some pretty wonderful sights. And if you like water, well you can live on it for months at a time! Lastly, the Army and they protect the security of the US so if you join them, you will know that you are protecting us!
Navy vs. others:
There is too much to write here so look at this site. It'll help you with all the questions. And it has more benefits! [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
School and Military:
I wouldn't recommend it. It's normally one or the other and you probably wouldn't have time for both.
Film Writting and Military:
This is where you are like my brother. My brother wants to go to film school but he is gonna wait. After you get out of the military you will have lots of money and you can get farther with what you want to do till you have people paying you! You will have plently of time in your life for that after military.
How Long?
Well you can sign in for defferent amounts of times. My brother is in for 8 years but you can go in for 5 years and I think 3 years too but I'm not completely sure about the time limits.
