YES! Ask him, your dating him there is no need to be shy. Some people like ot save themselves others like to "get it over with".
I would just ask him... nicely as he is obviously shy aboutthe situation in some way.
But remember if he doesnt want to talk about it its his choice, he could have some emotional pain -tie to that subject.
