To be able to answer this question, it would help to know the computer model, the operating system you use, (IE; XP, Windows 7, etc) as well the type of video card you have in your system.

But I digress, Restart your computer, and press F8 (at the very first "loading" screen you would see) that should bring up the windows startup menu items. From this menu there should be an option for VGA mode. Select VGA mode and windows will happily boot with a lower screen resolution (can't remember which one). Once windows boots up you can change your screen resolution to something you are happy with and reboot the machine. SVGA (800x600) if we're talking Windows 7.When you're in Windows, change the resolution setting back to 1024x768 or something within your monitor's known range, save the settings, reboot and allow Windows to boot up as normal and it should be as right as rain.
Hoped this helps your screen resolution problem.
