What do you think my chances of pregnancy are?

Question Posted Saturday January 1 2011, 4:18 pm

I only get my period once a year. I know that i need to see a gyno, I already made an appointment but what are your thoughts on the chances of me getting pregnant from having sex with a condom/pulling out/ period once a year?

Just because your body doesn't regularly shed your uterine lining in the form of a menstrual period doesn't mean you don't ovulate / release an egg. Your doctor will be able to give you a better answer to why your body doesn't do what it naturally should be doing every month, but this could be anything from hormone-related to a problem in ovulating. We don't know so we can't say if you can or can't get pregnant despite your lack of periods.

It takes one, ONE, sperm to get you pregnant. A full ejaculation can contain as many as 100 million sperm at a time. Only one needs to reach an egg. Only one.

There is absolutely no way of giving you a fairly accurate guesstimate.

If you have sex, you're at risk of becoming pregnant.

If you have sex without protection then you are at a high risk of becoming pregnant.

There are actually girls who have never menstruated, who engaged in sex, and who ended up getting pregnant before they even saw blood. You never, ever, know if or when you body ovulates without doing proper tests each month.

The pull out method is estimated to be somewhere between 15% and 27% in a failure rate. Condoms are something like 8% to 12% failure rate. Take that however you'd like. Using both methods is always better than just using one, but there is always still a failure rate.

Approximately 1 million American teenage girls still get pregnant each year. Eight out of ten are unplanned pregnancies.

Your risk if your choice. We can't put a percentage on it. We can't give you decent odds on if you will or will not become pregnant from having sex. There's too many factors to take into account. All you really should care about is that sex naturally makes babies and if you have sex then you are putting yourself at a risk of becoming pregnant.
