Can smoking affect your period?

Question Posted Wednesday October 27 2010, 2:57 pm

f/15

Hi, so yes, I am fifteen and I do smoke. I've been smoking for about a year now. I got my first period when I was eleven years old. So I've had it for about five years. I always had it every other month for 6 days up until recently. As of three months ago, my menstrual cycle has been acting a bit odd. In August, I got my period unusually late. In fact, almost three weeks late. The next month, September, I got my period when it usually comes. It was pretty heavy, but I didn't think much of it. After it ended, about three or four days later, it came back. Much lighter, but it was still obviously my period and not just post-menstrual spotting. Both lasted 7 days. Now this month, October, I got it a little earlier than usual. It was the same as last time, a little heavy, followed by a lighter period two days later. About a week after that, it came back very heavy with horrible cramps and nausea. My body has been extremely sore since it started. I am still currently on it. It's been three days.

Also, I don't know if this is related, but I am sexually active. And I have been since July. Although, since my boyfriend is in college and I don't get to see him too often, we don't have sex often. Only about once or twice a month.

Thanks!

Smoking does not affect your period and neither does being sexually active. What can is stress, anxiety, a change in your eating habits (such as a diet), or a change in your exercise routine. Usually your period can change weeks from month to month, but it isn't a regular occurrence. Now for the heaviness and lightness of your period, that could be another issue. What I suggest you do is you go to the doctors. It may be nothing or it may be something, but it's better to get checked out, especially since this has become a routine problem.
