Practicing mandarin

Question Posted Friday September 24 2010, 3:16 am

Hi, 18/m.
I just had my first mandarin Chinese lesson yesterday. It's an evening course, and I was just wondering, how do I practice it? Of course You need alot of practice to be fluent. But I don't really know anyone else who speaks it? What would be a good way practice the language on my own?

Thanks folks :)

Practice it by using it.

Pull up some Mandarin websites online. Purchase some books (ebay? large library?) that are written in Mandarin and go through them to practice seeing the material and using it in context.

Find an epenpal that also speak Mandarin and practice through email and through Skype, if possible. Many sites offer worldwide virtual penpal exchanges.

Think of the usage when you do your normal things each day. You get a carton of milk from the refrigerator and you have the opportunity to remind yourself how to say "milk" in Mandarin. This helps you to recall this sort of thing for long-term. You get rid of that "get it and forget it" pattern that always seems to occur when you don't use something you finally obtained. Practice your knowledge by verbally saying the terms or phrases and audibly listening to those sounds.

Find a study partner. Look for someone in your area that would be interested in learning this foreign language. Maybe a friend of yours would, too, like to sign up so that you two could practice conversational skills while out and about. It could be fun.
