Question Posted Friday August 13 2010, 10:18 pm

Thanks. Reading your profile, I can tell that you've been through a lot. Though I hope I don't fail University and have to start from scratch again. If it were me right now, I'd probably give up at this moment. As another follow-up question, you told me that I should tell my doctor to refer me to a psychiatrist.

Maybe it's a stupid question, but, do you know if it's for FREE? Because at least if I'm goign to my doc then it's free because of my health card. Probbly not, but I'm 17 and I really don't want my parents to find out, nonetheless get them to pay for counselling or what I'll be doing there.

Thank you for the follow-up :)

I don't know what province you're in, so I'm not sure what things are like. I live in Ontario, so here's what I've found:

Some psychiatrists are free to go to under OHIP. Depending on the city you're in, it may have great access to mental health care facilities. Where I am, there's a huge mental health clinic covered by OHIP, so I work with a counselor, a psychiatrist and an occupational therapist and it doesn't cost me anything. Make sure that your doctor knows that you can't pay for treatment so he can refer you to the right person.

Especially if you're heading off to university soon, you should make sure you get a diagnosis. I only just found out a little while ago that mental illness counts as a disability and entitles you to special treatment in school (things like extended deadlines, separate test writing rooms) and that can be the difference between passing and failing.
