Can you still get tan when its cloudy out?

Question Posted Wednesday June 16 2010, 11:20 am

I want to get nice and tan before summer is over for a lot of reasons. My family is going to go to the beach in 2 weeks and I probably will get a good tan then but I don't want to start all pale and burn really bad. So, I decided I would start tanning outside at home too. I planned to start this week but it's been cloudy out for two days now.

My mom said the clouds don't matter and I can still get some tan time in. Can I still tan even if the clouds are out? I mean, you can't tan in the shade, right, so how could you still tan when the clouds are out? Doesn't make sense to me but I need to know so I know if I should go lay out in the sun or not today.

Yes you can. UV rays are the ones that cause your pigmentation (skin color) to change. These rays travel down to your skin despite clouds. You can even get sunburned on a cloudy or hazy day. These rays are strong enough to penetrate clouds but you might have to stay out a while longer than you would on a sunny day.
