I'm not a guy, but I still have something to say to this.
If two people break up it's usually due to an internal problem (having nothing in common, constantly fighting, being bored with one another, etc) or it could be due to an external problem (long distance relationship, parents, lifestyles, etc). When any of this issues become too large and the relationship begins to be more challenging than it is rewarding, that is when a break up will happen. Now, the only way two people would get back together is if that issue were to change. I don't know your hypothetical issue or if it is repairable, but in most cases it is very difficult if not impossible. The thing to realize here is that while one person may view the relationship as say fun and lively, the other may view it as unsatisfying and perhaps even boring. But some things, for example living in a different state, can be changed by moving closer. The best approach would probably be to attempt to talk to the ex and figure out whether he is willing to/able to fix the situation. But if the feelings aren't there anymore then the person may not WANT to fix it. It's not as easy as just looking cute to school one day to let them know what they are missing. And sometimes you see people get back together and you wonder how did that happen?? Well sometimes a person will miss their ex, regret their decision and get back together. The only problem with that is that unless the core problem that existed in the relationship is not fixed, the couple will just break up again. So remember, it's all about fixing the problem.
