Question about soldering Hello everyone. I couldn't figure out what category I should put this in, so miscellaneous it is. I guess it's also kind of a jewelry question. One of my jewelry pieces requires me to solder a cabochon to a brass cuff blank. I just want to know if I absolutely have to use flux when soldering. What would be the result if I didn't use flux? The only reason I'm trying to not use it is because I live in the middle of nowhere and I have had extreme difficulty finding a store that would sell flux. By the way, I'm using a soldering iron, not a torch, if that makes any difference. I'm under some time constraints, please help if you can. Thanks!

I'm more used to soldering electronics and plumbing, but, here goes...
the flux's purpose is to help the solder bond to the metal, you can do it without flux, but every time I've done that, its become an experiment in how fucked up I can make the job look. an iron is more like a scalpel, whereas a torch(even the small ones) are more of a broadsword, you get a lot more finesse with heat application on smaller jobs with the iron. there's actually solder that comes with a flux core, its easy as hell to find in any hobby shop or hardware store.

Ironically my friend had to do this, she didnt use a flux, and it came out fine. I do have to say it would be easier with the torch though:-) but still very do-able haha.
Good luck!!!! ]
