iPhone Broken- Ringer icon wont go away

when you make the ringer louder or softer on the iPhone that image shows up and the bars represent the loudness or sofness your phone is at, but my icon never goes away and does not let me adjust the volume it always just goes down when i push up and is really messed up.

what do i do?

hold the top power button and the home button down at the same time until the phone shuts off to rest it. then wait a little and turn it back on using the main power button. hopefully that helps. i never had that problem with my iphone. :[
