Should I get back with my ex or pursue something new?

Question Posted Monday August 24 2009, 3:38 pm

My ex-boyfriend and I lived together for a year and a half in NY before moving to CA together and then breaking up a few months later. We've been working on maintaining our friendship since then and it has it's ups and downs. Recently he has been talking about moving back to NY and I have looked at it as an opportunity to move on with my life without him around confusing me. Since we broke up I have hung out with other guys from time to time casually, but haven't really felt anything for anyone else.
Recently I met a guy at work and I like him and was eager to start dating again and see how things progressed. However, now my ex (without knowing about the other guy) is telling me he loves me and wants me back. I told him we'll talk about it this weekend because I need some time to think, but I'm really confused. I love him and want to be with him but am afraid that our problems run too deep, I think we have fundamental differences in our personalities and behaviors that make it a bad idea to be together. But we did fine when we were more open and trusting with each other, we were able to discuss the little ways we hurt each other and understand that it was unintentional. I don't want to start dating someone else only to run off with my ex later, and I don't want to blow this new guy off only to realize that I would have been happier with him if things don't work out with my ex.
I think the main problem I'm having is that I used to trust my ex completely and we never had any major problems but that trust is gone and since that happened we fight a lot, even just as friends. I have the best time with him and I care about him so much, but I don't know if it's worth it to give it another try. I'm afraid to get my heart broken again, but he knows me better than anyone and I don't know if I want to open myself up to someone new. Please if you have any advice help me. I can't go to family and friends because they have a horrible opinion of my ex and had a lot to do with our break up in the first place. This is about me and what makes me happy not them so I don't really want their skewed opinions.

It seems to me like you really care about your ex but you do have a lot of problems. You have to think long term if you didn't work out before and you have even more problems and fights now then it may not work out again and you might lose your chance with the other guy. But then again, it seems that you have some unfinished business with your ex and you still have deep feelings for him. If you still love him I think you should try to work it out with him. Be open and tell him that you want all honesty with him. Then again if your personalities and priorities are different maybe you shouldn't try again. It all comes down to this.. do you think you and your ex can work through the differences? Does he love you as much as you love him? Do you think toy will ever feel this way or even stronger about the other guy because if not then maybe you shouldn't even go for him. Listen to your heart and keep these things in mind. I hope this helps you.
