Happy 65th Birthday Smokey Bear! Was there a REAL Smokey Bear?

Question Posted Sunday August 9 2009, 10:49 pm

My friend was talking about how Smokey Bear (you know, "Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires" or "Only You Can Prevent Wild Fires" or whatever) was officially 65 today. I am curious though is Smokey the Bear was or is a real bear in actuality? I know that the bear on TV is so fake but did Smokey Bear really exist at some point? Like, was the character guy based on a real bear or anything?

Additional info, added Tuesday August 11 2009, 10:57 pm:
Apparently nobody could understand what I was asking. I am not stupid. I am well-aware that bears do not speak. I was curious if the character was inspired by a real bear though. You know, like the person who thought Smokey Bear up in the beginning had a bear visiting his backyard for awhile one summer and voilĂ ! Inspiration.

It's like asking if Mickey Mouse was based on a real mouse. He was in actuality. Walt Disney was inspired by a mouse and thus Mickey was born. I know the mouse didn't talk or wear pants like Mickey.

I was just curious if Smokey Bear was created in the same fashion.

if I saw a bear in the woods wearing a drill instructor hat saying "Only you can prevent forest fires", I would immediately scream "OH SHIT ITS A BEAR!!!!" and promptly unload on it with rapid fire .308 winchester hollow points. maybe even slit its throat afterwards with a big knife to be sure. If smokey did exist, it wouldn't have been for very long.

No, there wasn't.

What real bear do you know that's gonna say "Only you can prevent forest fires?"

None. He's a fictional character that was thought up to prevent people damaging nature with their careless ways. So no, he's fake, and he doesn't exist as a real bear.

Although, if he did, I'd probably piss my pants cause a talking bear would be the shit.

This would tell you everything:

But to conclude your answer, he's a fictional character.
