Everyone's pain tolerence is different, but to give you a general, usually the super painful part lasts 3 days- for me it did at least. Then, the next 2 days after that felt a lot better. A week after I was pretty much used to them. The real thing that gets you is you're gums adjusting to all that metal pushing up against it. It should be fine though, they give you wax to help it feel better. I agree with the person under me, deffinatly bring a pain reliever, they'll be you best friends :). You might feel pressure when you get them on,it's going to hurt to chew because of the pressure.
So to answer "2", well, mashed potatoes will be easy to eat. I ate pudding, jello, potatoes, squash; those kind of foods at first. You can eat normal foods like chicken, but you'd have to cut them up into tiny pieces; still good though. As long as you won't have to chew them so much then you can eat it =].

Potatoes are a good food for braces. You should be able to eat normal foods just be careful. I don't recommend you eating as steak..that would probably hurt right now.
