How to wash socks and keep them feeling soft like new
Question Posted Tuesday June 9 2009, 2:55 am
Ok here's my problem. When I first buy socks they usually feel soft, flexible and all of that...but after washing them they begin to feel tighter when I put them on and don't feel as soft as a brand new pair of socks. It's almost like they get thinner, too! Is it because I use a washing machine? Is it the detergent I use? Is there something I can do about it?
hitler_the_goat answered Tuesday June 9 2009, 2:08 pm: it basically comes down to three things:
1: quality of the sock
2: amount of wear they're getting
3: detergent and fabric softner
socks are not created equal, if you're going hiking(or in my case, a long combat patrol), you want some heavy duty socks. walking around at work or school, you can do with white regular socks.
I buy my patrol socks from Bass pro shops, I had six pairs of them last me through from april 2007 till now, they're still soft, still awesome, and its because they're ten bucks a pair. I've never maintained them with any softeners whatsoever, and I've on occasion had to wear the same pair for a week straight (battalion operation in a place called the To'Chee valley, nowhere near a washing machine). my white socks, I replace them every couple of months, because I only use them for running, and its cheaper to replace them. if you want quality, buy quality. maintaining them and not using them as often as I have will probably make the socks I've had for two years last you a decade. depends whether you can deal with forest green socks too.
