Mental Illness + Surviving College large investment worth it?

Question Posted Saturday May 2 2009, 9:48 pm

I am 27 female US resident
I suffer from major depressive disorder, bpd, pstd, and anxiety. I've struggled for years with my mental illnesses and last summer finally got my Associates degree.
I want to go and get my B.A. degree
I am looking at a program that would cost me approx $45K to complete my 2 years. The reason it costs so much is because it's 1. Online 2. For adult learners 3. Has extra support for people with disabilities.
The program offers me a LOT of what I need, on campus and online support, a disability services that really is willing to HELP me and shorter courses (quarter instead of semester).
But am I being crazy to think that $45,000 for a degree is ok? Should I go to a school for $20K that doesn't have any of the support things I need for my mental illnesses?
Am I crazy to think I should invest such a large sum in myself? Should I take the greater risk of not graduating for the cheaper cost, or should I invest more in myself and have a much higher chance of passing?
HELP!

Believe me this program is the best one for you to be enrolled in. Yes, $45,000 is steep but you'll get a quality education and degree from it. How did it make you feel when you interviewed with them for a spot? If it felt so right than indeed it is. Obey your gut instinct.

These people also want to help you with tons of support to get you through the program and handling your illness. The other school isn't going to do that at all or intensely enough. If you need ther help with bipolar disorder, anxiety or more than you can bloody well forget it.

Most of their staff has no idea what all that means because they only know physical or learning problems. I can say this having BP myself and having profs, students and disability counselors turn their back on me when I had crisis.

Fortunately, I completed the program one month prior to going off the rails so to speak. I was at graduation but don't recall it. Some evn thought I did this for attention or "deserved it".

Get your B.A. from the school offering all the support as it's the best place for you and a better institution. Being able to do courses from home is ideal because no matter how sick you feel from day to day you can log in and finish work.

$45,000 sounds great as a lot of people pay that per year if in an ivy league place. It's not the cost that counts it's quality. You could pay $45,00 or even $20,000 and get crap for the money or wonderful things as well. Only you know where your heart lies and what one you like best. You can always get financial aid if needed.

If you think your meds and councelling won't be enough to get you through a $20k two year degree, do the $45k program. It is a lot of money, definitely. But if you get a job that pays $45 or $50k a year, it really isn't that much in retrospect. You will be able to get loans to pay monthly after you get your degree. It's important that you get your B.A. degree because you want it. It's hard to have mental illnesses, but it's great that they have programs that will help people with them. You can remain as normal as everyone else by getting your B.A. and getting a good job, even if it costs more. It sounds like a really good program that has all the kinks worked out and is very professional.

Hope this helps!
Darby(:
