what can we use to get rid or snow and ice besides salt?

Question Posted Thursday March 26 2009, 6:07 pm

I need to get rid of snow and ice and figure out a way to do it without salt because salt ruins the environment. What should I use?

They have environmentally friendly ice removers at the store, they just cost more money. One garden website recommended using salt water in a sprayer. You would use a lot less salt and be just as effective. Another website recommended natural clay cat litter. It won't melt the ice, but if you shovel as much as you can, the cat litter will prevent slips and falls.

Hot water if you don't mind a higher water bill. You can also always scrape and shovel it off, but that requires more work.
