Driving with a permit

Question Posted Monday March 23 2009, 7:02 pm

I'm 15 and I just got my permit and my parents are saying I can't drive on the streets (with them in the car while I have my permit) unless I have insurance and they're not going to get me insurance until I go to anger management classes. Is that even true? A lot of my friends told me you are under your parent's insurance while driving until you get your actual driver's license. Anyone know for sure? Thank you!

Absolutely true.

Your parents have to spend LOADS of money to add a new driver (you) to their policy. The situation with the permit will vary from state to state.

If your parents haven't informed the insurance company of the fact that you are going to drive the car, then you driving it would be just like them picking someone without a license off the street corner, giving them the keys and wishing them luck... then expect the insurance company to pay when they wreck.

If you have a history that suggests you might benefit from anger management classes, then what could it hurt? Frankly, I think everyone should attend at least once. If it is a good anger management class, you will really like the changes you see in yourself.

Be safe out there, for yourself and everyone else on the road. :-)
