missing dvd/cd drive?

I have A Toshiba Laptop with windows in it. I was installing stuff (music and other programs - i just restored it and was putting everything back in) but the way the computer is when you put a disc in a window pops up for what you want to with the cd and if you go under my computer there is usually two files C drive and one for the cd/dvd drive. I uninstalled the free trial of microsoft office 2007 and i restarted the computer to install the full version and i went to install it and the window didnt pop up and the cd would not load so i went into my computer and the cd/dvd drive isnt listed there and i put a music cd in and nothing happened either and i went into wmp to see if the cd would play and i went to now playing and it wouldnt so its like the drive got deleted or something? this never happened to be before. how can i get this back to working?

Additional info, added Monday March 23 2009, 4:12 pm:
the light comes on the door when it opens and you can hear the disc spinning so it seems like its working you just cant get into it on the computer..

The BIOS for the drive could be trashed. If you know how you could always go in and make sure that the option to boot from the drive is working.
