Seroquel- stuffy, swollen nose.

Question Posted Monday February 23 2009, 6:23 pm

I doubt many people will be able to answer this, because not many people know anything about this situation, but if you can offer any info on any part of the question, that would be helpful!

Anyways, I take the Rx drug, Seroquel. I take it at night and when it starts to kick in, often it will give me a stuffy, runny nose. When i wake up, my nose is incredibly swollen, like i don't look like the same person. If you have taken this drug and had some kind of nasal symptoms, let me know! My shrink says she hasn't seen this in her other patients.. but i've found online that a stuffy/runny nose is a common side effect of the drug. but i had a nose job like 2.5 years ago, so i guess my nose is just a lot more sensitive.. which i guess would account for the swelling. The reason Seroquel does cause that side effect is because it inflames the lining of the nose (crazy drug). And i have found out from doing research that when the lining is swollen, the openings from the sinus to the nose are blocked and sinus fluid can't drain. Sounds like that is my problem. So i do what i can, i take nasal decongestants and use the nasal sprays, but it really doesnt help THAT much. So, does anyone know something i could do to prevent all this swelling? Is is possible this is causing permanent damage to my sinuses/other stuff up there??

Also, i've heard about people with sinus problems getting turbinate surgery. Could this help my swelling and other nasal symptoms? If anyone knows anything about turbinate surgery, or shrinking of the turbinates, please let me know!

I went to an ENT and she was so rude and just told me there was nothing she could do, because my problem seemed to be caused by a psychiatric drug, which is something she doesnt deal with. So it seems like my only option is doing some research on my own.. no one seems to know the answer!

For anyone who actually took the time to read this, THANK YOU.

NEW INFO MARCH 1ST:

You never mentioned what medications you are on plus the Sereoquel. That's important as while they make you stable they all interact in a way that you can have multiple side-effects and feel sick every now and then. Let me know the amounts and what illness they are treating.

Seroquel is an anti-psychotic and IF you are bi-polar usually coupled with lithium and several "band-aid" drugs to provide a floor so you're not all depressed and a ceiling to make sure you never go manic. It has other purposes too.

How much if any water are you drinking in a day? The thing with Seroquel, Lithium etc. and other drugs you are on requires you to keep chugging back bottles of water constantly. If you don't it can make you nauseated, could dehydrate you or make you have symptoms like you are sick and then go away. Often you can have flu like symptoms.

Water is needed to make Seroquel, Lithium and other drug combinations they would have prescribed work in your body. Always be hydrated for that reason. Although you had surgery on your nose or a deviated septum if it wasn't given you trouble for years it's not now. It's drug related. Keep bitching to your doctor to look into it and he will.
