I just got my braces off about a month ago. I've had them on for 3 years. When i first got them on i couldnt really eat anything for the first week. Only soft foods. It doesnt really hurt when they put them on just a few hours after! But eventually you get used to it. The only bad part is worrying if you have food stuck in your teeth. At least thats how it was for me. I would suggest taking an ibuprofen or something before you go and get them because it reduces the pain, and i heard some people get headaches after they first get them on. After a few weeks you wont notice it barely anymore. Its all worth it in the end when you have straight beautiful teeth :)

I had braces four or five years ago. They didn't hurt when they got put on at all. The next day, there will be a little soreness. It's the same way when you get them tightened each month. It just feels like pressure while they're tightening them. The next couple days, you'll have some aches. Just keep Aspirin or Ibuprofen on hand and you'll be fine.

They will feel weird when you get them on, but not in a painful way, it just feels foreign.

When you get them tightened you're mouth will be sore for a couple of days. Nothing that tylenol can't make bearable. The worst is if you end up getting rubber bands. If you do I advise wearing them at night so you only have to deal with the pain in the morning, rather than constantly all day long.
