Question Posted Tuesday December 30 2008, 12:01 am
hi peeps :)
well you answered a question for me before. i'm the one who had to wear a tampon like everyday! so anyways, i have my period right now but when it's done i'm going to try my hardest to stop the tampon craze! i was just wondering though, can me wearing a tampon everyday cause it to be smelly down there? i was talking to the doctor about it, how i thought it kind of smelt weird and she asked if it itched or burned and i said no and she said i was okay. but i wash it with water everyday, and it still has a weird smell! i was just wondering if wearing one would cause this? is it also bad to wear a panytliner everyday then?
You probably have disturbed your natural balance down there. It sounds like you have a yeast infection or a bacterial infection.
While a yeast infection is usually just an uncomfortable, odd-smelling nuisance, a bacterial infection can really hurt you--even leading to constant pain for the rest of your life and/or complete infertility. Yeast infections can will usually go away on their own if you discontinue the reason why they began anyway--but a bacterial infection REQUIRES medication. If you have a bacterial infection then the longer you go without treatment, the more your body will be damaged from it.
You are never suppose to "self-diagnose" when it comes to the vagina, especially. Both of the above infections share very similar symptoms. Both oft he above infections produce an odd odor (yeast is usually slightly yeasty and the bacterial is usually somewhat fishy). Only a doctor can truly tell you if something is going on.
For note, having an infection doesn't mean you're going to have all of the symptoms that are listed as, well, symptoms. Some people have extreme itching when they have an infection while others have no such sensation. Some people smell different than others--some don't have a strange odor at all! The only way you KNOW if you have an infection is if you take a trip to the doctor and have them do a few swabs...
Yes, the tampon can definately cause strange smells if it has disrupted your natural balance. Yes, I highly recommend you tell your doctor that you'd like to be checked out for vaginal infections because you have odd odors.
It isn't bad to wear a pantyliner every day. The only way it could be bad is if you wore it until it was soaked and the never changed it (ie: going days without changing a pantyliner). You'd, most likely, get a bit of skin irritation if you did that though so you'd be well-aware that you were doing something wrong. Pantyliners are, for the most part, non-harmful to the human body.
If your doctor finds no signs of any infection in the vagina then it's possible that the lining of the vagina is being ripped away from the tampons so much that it cannot heal in enough time--leading to A LOT of dead cells that need to be expelled. Any way it is, I do believe that's why you're having an exceptional amount of discharge--you're making your own body over-produce because you keep soaking it up. Please remember that vaginas are suppose to be wet/moist constantly for health.
So, my thinking is:
Yeast infection
or
Bacterial infection
or
An excessive amount of dead cells and unhealed tissues.
See your doctor about getting checked. If she says something stupid like, "Oh, but you don't have all the signs...you're just fine," then remember that this is YOUR body. If you want to make sure you're safe then she is suppose to help you--she gets PAID to do that sort of thing. Don't listen to her if she blows you off--hold your position of wanting to be checked and be firm about it.
I hope things are well with you and you find yourself to be healthy. I do very much worry about you and I've prayed for you for a few nights now.
