Job involving Kids: High Salary

Question Posted Sunday November 23 2008, 11:37 pm

I (think) that i really want to work with kids. I am a senior in high school and i am going to college next year. I'm not really sure what i want to do yet though. I deffinatly don't want to be a teacher, or go into medicine. I dont partiularly want to go to graduate school (although ii might). Also, i want to find a job with a high salary (i know that that isn't a good criteria to go by but still).

I have heard Child Life Specialist which sounds interesting and so i am looking into that further.

any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!

You could look into child psychiatry (or is it psychology... one can give medicine & the other cannot, I believe).

Some day care centers bring in the big $$ while others do not, so you'd have to look into that.

Basically, most jobs that deal with kids (other than "medical" positions) don't pay much money.

If you are really into working with kids, you could get a business major with an early childhood education minor & open up your own day care center or come up with some ideas and open your own business. Keep in mind the customer if you were to ever open up your own day care - extend your hours later than most places... be available from 7am-7pm - that would help majority of working parents. Don't be the most expensive place around because there are single parents who need help, too... cut a break for single parents...
I know you didn't say you actually wanted to do that, but I thought I'd toss out a few pointers for it anyway.

You could try being a lawyer for cases specific to children - kind of like being a lawyer that deals with social work. I would just suggest a social worker, but they get paid much less than teachers.
A teacher with a masters degree and a few years under his/her belt makes roughly $30,000. I'll be teaching special education, so I'll get a little more than that.

A child life specialist gets roughly $43,000/year for that position, so I'm not quite sure what you consider high paying - I was thinking over $60,000, but I guess not?

Anyway, I hope this gives you a few ideas.
