What should I bring on a vacation trip to New York City?

Question Posted Saturday October 11 2008, 10:05 pm

I'm going on a vacation-type trip to New York City this winter and I was just wondering what type of clothing I should bring and what would be appropriate. I will be staying for 2 and 1/2 weeks so I know I'll need to bring some essentials like deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, hair brush, hair accessories, etc. It sounds very silly but I've never traveled and I really have no idea what one should bring on a vacation trip.

I live in Florida and we don't really have winter like NYC does. I'm not sure on what type of clothing I should buy and if I should buy winter accessories like scarves, mittens/gloves, earmuffs, etc. I saw some Hollister winter jackets that looked very cozy but, again, I don't know if I should buy a winter coat for this trip. Old Navy has some adorable winter sweaters and Abercrombie & Fitch even has arm warmers.

So, in short, I need some advice on what I should bring (and purchase) for my trip to New York City this winter. Specific brands are appreciated so I can consider quality and stay fashionable too while I'm staying in New York City.

Thank you.

Hi there !
I'm was very surprise when I read your question.
I in the same situation as you. i'm going to NYC for 2 and a half week this winter and i'm from florida (shocking).
AND AND i also wanted to buy that hollister jacket you saw. I bought the one with the fur inside for $140. It is pretty warm but quite a splurge. But I love it :) i recommend you to buy it. I'm still searching for gloves, scarfs, and beanie. Maybe I should buy them at hollister too lol. Since you said old navy have some cute sweater i should go check it out! I'm still searching for things i need. Have fun on your vacation and hope we survive NY winter.

i also posted a similar question as you in another forum. you can read the advices from some of the people.

Well i used to live in New York and now i live in Florida and I was up there for a trip so I know what you need. First off you need extremely warm clothing in the winter. YOU WILL FREEZE! because you live in florida, your blood has become thin and people in New York have thick blood. so therefore :
1. Warm Scarves, Winter Coats/Jackets, Mittens ( and not the cheep ones made of ridiculous materials. you need the real thing. NO THIN CLOTHING! YOU WILL FREEZE! lol)
2. I suggest warm socks, the cute kind if you prefer, plus leg warmers - they are very helpful and if you put them with jeans they look really adorable. (hollister sells them but i'm not sure if they'll keep you warm)
3. sweaters with hoods preferably
4. all necesities, tooth brush, alarm, hair products, brushes, combs, make up, shampoos, blow dryers are good because walking around a cold house with wet hair is extremely un pleasant.
5. boots like uggs or ones they sell at charlette russe are really good, they'll keep your feet warm.

can't think of anything else but hope i helped
