Tapers are long and they knocked around more which can cause irritation or swelling.
If you take your taper out for a day and put it back the hole will shrink and you will have to stretch it again, and this will piss off your ear and make it more likely for you to get an infection, I'm serious.
Hmm, signs of infection would be irritated ear, redness, swelling.
You said that your ear is swollen...it could happen that it will start to develop some puss or discharge in your ear. If that happens, Clean with salt water mixture twice a day, or if you're at home around lunch time or whatever, do it then too. Also don't take out the jewelry, then the infection could get trapped.
But then again sometimes the ear will swell and then go back to normal without any pain or infections. That happened to me. I put a 10ga in and my lobe swelled a lot and was red but not painful. A few days later it went back to normal.
I guess it might be a sign that your ear is starting to get pissed off :P
So you'll have to see.
I hope this helped :) [ Disconnected's advice column | Ask Disconnected A Question ]
