Dance skills

Question Posted Sunday August 10 2008, 3:58 pm

this question is for anyone who is in high school and is a good committed dancer:
i LOVE to dance, but i'm not very good. (pointe, ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical) i'm not BAD, it's just that everyone else who's in high school is in the highest level and i'm in the 2nd to highest level with girls younger than me. everyone always thinks that i'm younger then i really am because i'm in that level. i try SO hard to get better and get into the highest level but every single time i try something in dance i get rejected, and i'm NOT even kidding. for example, like getting good parts in shows, and moving up in classes. i've never gotten what i wanted in dance, yet i still do it because i love it so much. so i was just wondering, is there anything i can do to improve more? i take as many classes and intensives as i can, and i have a dance studio in my basement so i practice in there every single day, but it still seems that i'm not good enough for the level above me. what could i do? but i also think that my dance school isn't really fair, because there are girls in that class worse than me that are like a year older than me so they're in the class, like how is that fair? the owner of my dance school only likes the girls in the highest level and is mean and unfair to everyone else. she never lets anyone else move up no matter how good or what their age is, you basically have to sneak into the class and hope she doesn't notice until like the middle of the year. i think i could probably be in them, even though i wouldn't be that good, i could definitely do it. the owner always groups me with the other girls in my level, but they SUCK and are younger than me. i dont know very much, but the one thing i do know is that i am better tahn the girls in my level, and i feel like she isn't even giving me a chance. she never watches me, she just automatically puts me with the girls in my level who i personally think are horrible. what could i do to make her be fair to me and let me be in the highest level with the rest of the people my age? and what could i do to improve? (mostly in ballet) also, what are some exercises i could do to make my ankles stronger for pointe? i'm pretty good at pointe, i can do basic things like center, pique turns, shennae's, single pirouettes, but sometimes if we have to do hard things like extensions in every direction in center i realize that my ankles aren't strong enough. because basically it's just going on and off pointe on and off on and off and my ankles aren't strong enough to do that, so what could i do to make them? and one last question, what could i do to be more 'smoother' in our jazz combinations, as my jazz teacher says. and how could i practice this? my jazz teacher said i didn't move up because of this, and, once again, i'm the one with younger girls. so, please tell me how i could get the owner to notice me and not just automatically group me with the bad girls and let me move up? how could i make my ankles strong enough to be able to go on and off pointe several times on one foot in center? how could i be 'smoother' and 'more into' my jazz dances? and last, i was just wondering if anyone had any tips on fouette turns. the most i've done on the right is 10, and on the left i cant really do them. so just any tips on them would be great. sorry i know it's a lot of different questions, but thank you!

im not a dancer but i think i can help with strengthening your ankles haha.

i used have veryyy weak ankles. so bad that i had to do tons of exercises every day.

the one that worked the best is you sit in a chair [or you can stand. whatever works better for you] and you take a face cloth or other small towel and lay that on a tile or a wood floor [they work better than the rug]. take an empty coffee can [fill it with something heavy like some sand or a few rocks] and place it on the other side of the towel. then you put your foot on the towel and scruch your toes while moving the towel inward towards you. then repeat :]

hope that makes sense ! let me know if you need help on what i said cause its kinda confusing if i can't show youu ! hahah

hope i helped !
