I think I might have diabetes. Both my sister told me today I might have diabetes cause I drink alot, because I get thirsty alot. So I looked up alot of the symptoms and I think I might have it. Anyone who has diabetes could you answer this and tell me some of the symptoms and stuff I might want to know like how you get tested like what they do and stuff? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. I know I can just look the symptoms and stuff up online, but i'd rather have answers from people who actualy have diabetes. Please and thankyou in advance.
I'm not sure which type of diabetes you think you have. Type 1 or Type 2?
Type 1 is something you are born with- it's in your genes and can't be prevented. No one knows the cause of it, but what happens is that your immune system attacks your insulin-making cells, so your pancreas can't make insulin anymore. Glucose that you get from food needs to get to these cells, but they can't because they're destroyed (your pancreas can't ever make insulin again) so the glucose stays in your bloodstream, making your blood sugar very high. Some symptoms are:
* peeing a lot
* drinking a lot
* eating a lot
* losing weight
* feeling tired all the time
To deal with Type 1, you need to get regular insulin shots or get insulin from an insulin pump to help your body work better and keep your blood sugar level normal. Also, you need to live a healthy lifestyle with the right diet and amount of exercise, as well as test your blood sugar level daily.
Type 2 is something that you acquire during your life- you aren't born with it. No one really knows for sure what causes people to get it, but most people who do are overweight, many have family members that have/had diabetes, and most are over the age of ten. When you have Type 2, your pancreas still makes insulin, but your body doesn't respond correctly to the insulin, so the glucose can't enter your cells still, just like in Type 1, so your pancreas still detects false high blood sugar levels. It tries to fix the problem by making excess insulin, but over time it wears out from so much extra work. When this happens, it actually can't make enough, so then you may get high blood sugar for real. Some symptoms of Type 2 are:
* peeing a lot
* drinking a lot
* feeling tired often
To treat Type 2, you need to make sure you're eating healthily and exercising enough (just live a healthy lifestyle) and check your blood sugar level regularly. Also, many people take insulin, or medicine that helps the insulin they already have work more effectively.
To find out if you have either type, have your mom set up a doctor's appointment- with blood tests, they'll be able to diagnose you. Keep in mind though, that just because you drink a lot doesn't automatically mean you're diabetic- any of the symptoms by themselves can mean something different than diabetes. Still, if you really think you have it, a doctor's appointment can be a good idea.
