im learning our song by taylor swift on the guitar. i have the chord progresssion down, thats the easiest part lol.. i just cant figure out the strum pattern. i know each chord starts out with two down palm mutes and then you strum after, i just cant figure out the strumming after. like is it down down up, up down up, ect. thanks!
I'm actually a guitarist myself, yet I'm not sure about hte song you are playing...but i do have a very handy website.
www.ultimate-guitar.com
In the search bar put the song, or change it to search bands and taylor swift. when you see the song you want, you should see to the side of it It has a listing on what type of file it is, you want to find the file that says guitar tab.
Now, im sure you don't know what a tab is, so let me explain it to you. A tab is like piano sheet music, but for guitar. For example, tabs will show you 6 lines and you'll see numbers all over the lines.... Let's say the number 15 is on the 4th string, that means you play the 15th fret on the 4th string. =).
Also, some helpful information about tab reading is if you see an 0 on a line, that means you play it without holding anything.
When you see like a cone over a few notes, those are hammer ons (not sure if that'd be on a song by taylor swift)
And you can read more about stuff there, its a great place to learn things...
(EX of a Tab ------------------------
------------------------
------------------------
-----4------0-------4----0--
--2------2----------------
----------------3-----3---
(One, by Metallica)
So what this is showing, is that you play the second fret on the fith string, than the 4th fret on the fourth tring, than the second fret on the fifth string, and then you play open (Open, or the 0 on a string in a tab is called open because you play the string without holding anything down)
Theres also a very helpful program called guitar pro that you can actually download little files that play the songs for you, and show you and let you hear how the song should sound, and show you exactly how you should be playing it.
The only bad thing about reading tabs without guitar pro, is you are never sure if it sounds right, where when using guitar pro it sounds quite the same, except instead of hearing the actual song you hear a MIDI of it (Litte sounds that imitate how the song actually goes.)
If you cannot find the song you are looking for on the website i gave you previously, there are numerous other places where you can find tabs, but NEVER download a tab, it is unneccesary for you to download a tab only because thats usually where viruses come up and it's not hard to put a tab on a website, so it's usually some kind of infection to your computer.
I'm sorry this was sooooo much but i know when i just started playing guitar i needed all the help i can get (Not saying your a beginner, just trying to help out)
And just a reminder, Guitar Pro also usually tells you what direction you should strum
