So recently i've been watching a lot of comedy (stage comedy; Larry the Cable guy, ron White, Dane Cook, etc. I've been inspired to start something on my own. I can be pretty funny at random moments, but not quite stage comedy. So heres a few questions on the subject. 1: Do comedians wing it on stage? 2: are the stories they tell real, fake or juist partially altered?
3: How can I imporve my comedy?
Some of the stories are real, some are fake, some are altered.
As far as 'improving' your comedy goes, I don't really think that can happen. You can work on delivery and stage prescience, and re-write jokes a million times - and sometimes even if the jokes you're telling aren't all that funny, those things can save you. Go to some shady little comedy club or an open mic and try out some stuff, find your niche. [ Thietyp's advice column | Ask Thietyp A Question ]

Haha, but about your question(s), for 1. I do know some comedians have an "act" that they are supposed to follow in order or as close to it as possible. In the begining of Jim Gaffigan's "Beyond the Pale" DVD, you can see him rehearsing his jokes from a typed script. As for 2., I guess you can never really know how genuine their stories really are. It seems though that if you tell a true story that really IS funny, you can be more passionate about it and thus, make people laugh more about it. I'm sure many comedians still pull of created stories though, and that is probably ok to do for the sake of comedy i suppose lol. My best advice on how to improve your comedy is to just really think hard about what really is funny in life. Things that comedians joke about that are true, in my opinion, are always much funnier. Say you notice an oxymoron at the supermarket or somthing, like "buy 5 get one free" think about a funny joke you could create about that. "Gee, thanks (say the company's name), I appreciate that free 6th good only after 50 bucks worth of crap. Then the clerk at the register tells me that deal expired two minutes ago." Life really is funny, and you can make so many good jokes about things. You just have to be "on top of the game" so to speak. Try to be spontaneous and create jokes on the spot in your head, and overall increase your response to humor in general. Hey I really wish you good luck!
