lower abs and hips

does anyone know any other ways to:
-work out and tone your lower abs other than crunches.
-and get rid of "love handles" or "muffin tops" other than running.

theres this one for your lower abs. you lay on the floor on your back and someone stands in back and you and you hold on to their ankles. then you keep your legs together and pull them up and the person behind you pushes your legs back down, but you cant let them hit the floor. you have to keep bringing them back up and they have to smack them down, and they can smack them to the sides also so you can get rid of the love handles.
