Well it doesn't really mean anything. It's sort of like another form of LOL (Laughing Out Loud), but look at it in a clockwise direction and you can see it's a little face laughing with its eyes closed. There are also some other ones like:

sometimes i don't want to type LOL or haha, because its not /really/ funny, its just like one of those things you smile at, but then smiling makes you look like a smart-alick. =O so it's like,
"omg, guess what i did today?"
"what?"
"ok, so, me and my brother got in a fight, and he beat me up. XD"
