this is a question i can answer from personal experince:). i have this big crush on this guy named shane. well shane and i were like the best of buds last year but i didnt want to ruin are relationship as being a friend so i didnt then but this year i started liking him a lot. so i asked my friend to ask him if he liked me and he said nope but he was smiling and he said i know she likes me. ( that was about 2 wks ago) and so hes been flirting a lot with me. i think you should tell him face to face because its easier to tell if he really likes you or not. plus most guys will tell a girl only to her face that he likes her otherwise he might lie and say no. but if your scared to tell him face to face. a friend might be a good choice too. make sure its a really good friend though. hope everything turns out good. message me back after u read this. good luck
