what would happen if you saved too many files on your desktop.. like there are too many icons?

If you have too many icons, they will fill up your desktop, and you'll have to access the ones that don't fit on the screen through Windows Explorer. You're better off putting your stuff in other places. For example, you can put files in "My Documents", or you can create new folders on your desktop.
