Question Posted Tuesday December 18 2007, 4:17 am

Has anyone ever done it before? And do you have to go to a doctor to get it done?

when i was little my mum always used ear candles on me.

i don't think a 'doctor' doctor would do it on you (i mean a GP) like your local doctor or anything. But i think that a special doctor like a specialist in herbal medicine and stuff could do that for you.

i'm not entirely sure if it's safe though, because i've read reports that say it isn't...but i'm fine and i've used them heaps of times.

i guess it's just one of those things which you have to decide for yourself.

That would be a very stupid thing to do:

"According to medical researchers, it is both dangerous and ineffective."

"A 1996 study concluded that ear candling does not produce negative pressure and fails to remove ear wax. Ear candles produce the same residue when burnt without ear insertion, and the residue is simply candle wax and soot."

"According to Health Canada 'Some promoters say it is an ancient treatment that can cure a number of medical problems. Don't listen: ear candling is dangerous, and has no proven medical benefits.'"

"The FDA issued an alert on 2007-10-10 identifying Ear Candles (a.k.a., Ear cones and Auricular candles) as a "Danger to Health"."

However, if you do want burning wax in your ears, you do not need to go to a doctor. They would probably refuse to do it.
