Obsession according to Maslow

Question Posted Sunday December 9 2007, 11:21 am

I'm writing a psychological analysis of my brother according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs and I've been able to explain a few things about him (like why he does extreme thing like mountain climbing) but I'm having a hard time explaining his obsession with certain people. When he starts admiring someone (for example, a rapper - Kanye West maybe) he takes it to an extreme, he'll find out everything about him, put up pictures, and try to turn himself into him. It's hard, but can anyone on here find a connecting between his obsession and maslow's theory?

PS. What more can be explained by maslow's theory? I feel like I don't know what part of a person can be explained by the herarchy of needs. It just explains our motivation. But like, what else?.

okay, here's what i can come up with. when your brother is obsessed with somebody like a rapper, he wants to be like that person and dress like that person, maybe to be "accepted" or something. on the hierarchy of needs chart i'm looking at right now, it's fitting into the esteem category- self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others, respect by others. (i'm looking at a chart on wikipedia in an article on abraham maslow.) maslow's theory was mentioned in one of my classes, but never really explained, but what i can gather is that the physiological needs are what keep us alive, but then all the needs after that are what keep us happy/healthy/whatever. i'm sorry i couldn't help more, but here's the article that i got some of this from: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
