timers

Question Posted Saturday December 1 2007, 7:04 pm

at olive garden, they have these little timers that they give you when you have to wait for a few minutes for a table. they always say" it will be about 15 to 20 minutes" or something like that, and then, 15 or 20 minutes later, it vibrates and lites up to let you know that your tables is ready. and i was just wondering how those work.

uisforukelele answered Saturday December 1 2007, 11:35 pm:
it's not a timer. each device is programmed with a different number or "frequency" (if you want to call it that), so when they write your name down on the list, they put the number of the device beside it. when your name comes up on the list, they press a button that makes your thing light up. it's like a remote control, essentially. the time thing is just an estimate so that you'll have a vague idea of how long- they don't really time anything, and neither does the device. if you want to think of it as a cell phone that can only receive calls, then that would make sense too.
