unitarian universalist

Question Posted Sunday November 18 2007, 11:43 am

I'm Unitarian Universalist. I live near Boston, and would love to go to a UU church. The problem is, I'm 14 and my mom believes that Universalism is "screwed up". I am very depressed about her opinion. She doesn't actually know that I'm a Unitarian, and I am afraid that she'll try to pry me away from my religion. She was brought up Catholic, and is now Christian, but that's not the religion for me, and UU is. I just don't know what to do, since I base my beliefs on Christianity, but I do not agree with some Christian beliefs. What should I do?

YAY a UUer. I'm so happy. i'm 16/f and I guess i'm lucky because my family has been going to a UU church since I was born. When you talk to her tell her that you're not a UNITARIAN and your not a UNIVERSALIST. being a unitarian universalist means that you embody qualities of both. here is a website you should read so that you have stuff to use when you talk to her. I personally don't believe jesus to be our savior, etc...and you may or may not, but make sure that she knows, even if some UU people don't like to mention it, that this religion was based off christianity and that some of us actually identify with christianity. Even if this isn't what you believe, for the sake of being able to practice what you want, try to convince her that this doesn't mean that you don't have the same beliefs as she wants you to, you just are more comfortable in a community that is tolerant of people of every background, and that celebrates diversity and that HUMANS are sacred (as well as god or whatever :)

it's gonna be hard to convince her of anything, so you might just have to bs it a little

goodluck
