In ancient Rome, brides wore fiery red veils to protect them from evil spirits on the day of the wedding. In ancient Judaism, the lifting and lowering of the veil represented sex, and what would happen in the marriage bed the night of. (Weird, right?) Brides used to traditionally wear their hair flowing down their backs to represent virginity, and it is often said that the veil now represents this.
