It's a big irony that being so happy can actually cause you pain. In this particular case, the guy loves you so much that he can't think of good enough words to describe it. It's not something he came up with on its own, it's a common saying, but it's very meaningful. His feelings relate to the example above because after spending time with you and then not being able to see you for awhile, he starts to hurt. So, the way he feels about you doesn't hurt, not being with you and missing you is what hurts.
