One of my friends had a metalic one that he used a tiny key he used to widen the spacer, but he had more servere problems with his teeth. As for the pain, well braces hurt alone haha I have had them befcre, so spacers aren't going to be much more pleasant. The pain will vary, but it shouldnt be that bad. Oh and spacers slowly separate your teeth, or if your teeth arent aligned properly, they help move them back into place. They are usually step one on the road to getting braces. Darby answered Saturday August 1 2009, 1:02 pm: Spacers are tiny blue rubberband-like things that they put between two teeth to create a space. The space it creates will be used when they put the braces in. You'll have two on the top and two on the bottom, most likely. They are somewhat painful because they create a gap in your teeth. But it's not an all-at-once pain. You have the spacers in for a week, so they create the space slowly. Just take some Tylenol and the pain will subside for the most part.
