is hacker smacker a good firewall to get? i was reading somewhere about it and i wanted to know if it was any good.

Don't buy a firewall. It's a waste of money. As long as you're not stupid, the average person is perfectly safe without any firewall. If you would like to run a firewall, check out my comparison of FREE firewalls:

If really, really want to spend money, you should buy a router, which has a built-in firewall. I use this model:

I run X-WRT firmware on my router:
